Ed Kabotie

Title- FREEDOM RUNNER (Gallery Print of watercolor and ink painting) The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 should be considered the first war for religious freedom in what today is called the United States of America. In preparation for this war, runners (it was illegal for a Native American to own a horse under the rule of Spain) were dispatched throughout the Pueblo villages of Northern New Mexico and Northern Arizona (500 miles that messengers ran by relay) . The runners delivered knotted chords to the war chiefs of each village with the instructions to untie a knot at the dawning of each day... when the last knot was untied, the villages were to simultaneously revolt throughout Pueblo country... (With no disrespect to the struggles of any other tribes & nations), the Pueblo nations of Northern New Mexico and Northern Arizona (Hopi, Tewa, Zuni, Towa, Keres & Tiwa) are the only group of Native Americans in written history to oust an established European colony from their homeland. Our 'Independence Day' is acknowledged every year on August the 10th. The Anniversary of the Pueblo Revolt! ...The Santa Fe Plaza should therefore be approached with the same reverence and respect given to ground zero in New York City. - Biography
My name is Ed Kabotie. I am from the village of Shungopagi and the Tewa village of Khap'o Owinge (Santa Clara Pueblo). On the day I was born, snow clouds hung over the mountains to the west of Santa Clara, so my aunt named me 'Okhuwa P'ing' (Cloud Mountain). My vision as an artist is to express the virtues of my Native American cultures. These expressions take the forms of overlay jewelry, watercolor paintings, traditional pottery, and trilingual (English, Hopi & Tewa) musical compositions.
My heritage is my inspiration. I am a third generation artist. Both my father and my grandfather before me were artists. My earliest memory is sitting with my father at the kitchen table of our home, with buffalo dance songs in my head, painting a picture to give to my dad. I am currently seeking to improve my skills and techniques in order to more effectively communicate my vision to the world.
